Victorian Ramblings

My son has been clearing the cellar of a lovely old Victorian house.  It was stacked to the ceiling with 'stuff'. He got to the window this week, this is on the inside!   The building is going to need some major restoration.  I wanted that fern for the garden, but he said the brickwork may come away if I pull it out!

From the outside......
That is a foxglove trying to grow in the brickwork!

Some of the rubbish down there is frankly a health hazard due to the damp.  I went with him as he also found a pile of coal. I am an amateur geologist and thought there may be fossils in the coal, but no; it's all high quality consolidated coal, far too compressed for fossils. I was nostalgic for a coal fire, that we always had at home when I was growing up. It was worth a look- obviously plant matter, but nothing distinguishable.
Nice  original tiling in the porch
but too many Y seams I think!

This is how long since it was properly cleared!

I have always had Victorian house envy. It is because of the large living area windows I think, so much light comes in.  I could never live in a cottage, they  have windows the size of the glass in your oven!

An Oldie Exhumed

I made this duvet cover over 20 years ago: it's all cotton and has lasted well, considering it was made from cheap cottons and dressmaking scraps.  I haven't used it for a few years, it was rediscovered at the back of the cupboard.  It's all soft and worn now, cozy as we have a cold snap. It's not until I took this photo that I saw the blocks spun the wrong way!!

310 bow ties  spun so far this month, I'm trying to stitch 10-20
a day to get them done.

 I couldn't resist  sewing a dozen together.

Old Red Sandstone thread.

This is my spiritual home, Marloes, Pembrokeshrie
This is some of the fantastic geology in the area.  The fold is about 55 feet high.
This is Old Red Sandstone. The textures and colours are numberless.  The cottages built from the stone are chocolate box beautiful.

I have been collecting red/rust/rock texture fabric for ages now, because the rocks in this area are so inspirational. These fabrics will be the background for my 'Evolution' wall hanging, still in the design stage but always at the forefront of my thinking (I have done lots of thinking in the last couple of weeks!)

I did some playing a while ago with evolving prairie points.
The reason for this post?  I found 5000 metre reels of rayon embroidery thread in the most perfect range of colours for this quilt on sale at Lords Sewing .

If you are a European machine embroiderer, check the site.

This range is gorgeous!
